My second long form story, work-in-progress. With this story, I'd like to practice my third person perspective skills. I would also like to accomplish writing a story without violent action scenes for conflict. Instead, I'd like this story to rely on emotional conflict, where climactic scenes exchange words instead of bullets.

The Taming of Torque

Agent Torque lives a violent and constrained existence as the only viper member of Chimera Squad. Her cooperative past weighs heavy, and makes integration feel like an impossible task. By the hands of fate, she finds herself in the company of Anthony Ramirez, a police officer of City 31. Together they unravel the past as they try to change themselves for each other.
My first story. Aferster reading A Captive Viper by Nikolaides, I thought to myself: "I can do that." So I did, and I spat out four chapters in four weeks in the summer of 2020, with many more to follow. This story is how I discovered my love of writing, and it's where I honed my style and learned a lot. It's rough around the edges, but it's the story I'm the most proud of. I wanted to subvert the generally campy themes of the XCOM setting and XCOM fanfiction in general by imbuing a darker, more serious tone.

A friend generated an AI image of a canine-looking character. From there, we spun up some ideas about who she was, and at that point I had to make a story for her.

Short story about a skater dude and a front-end programmer. Initially only one chapter, a certain artist persuaded me to write a chapter 2 after he drew the snake woman faceplanting off her skateboard.

Claire is a viper. She has needs, needs some people would find peculiar. On one moonless night in City 31, after a particularly hard day, she looks for a nice, lowkey human bar to find her victim for the night. Someone who can properly fulfill her needs.
A writer friend of mine, AP, sent an image his friend made of a viper. I entertained a backstory for her, and he did as well, and soon we began writing our versions of the same picture.

The Vise of a Viper

Devin made a bet against his friends, and lost that bet within five minutes. Devin isn't a coward, and understands he is doomed. His social status will be lowered and his dignity will be torn to shreds. The dare is simple: make an appointment with a chiropractor. But not all professionals in City 31 are human. It makes perfect sense that Devin's chiropractor has to be a viper.
A short, nice story. I wanted to write a platonic relationship between a human and a viper, and expand the world of Chimera Squad and City 31 a little bit more. I gave Amaso a little too much backstory and character, however, and now everyone wants a sequel for it. I doubt it, but lets just say I think Amaso has a really cool backstory.

The Veteran

Meeting the parents in a relationship is an awkward, yet necessary milestone for new couples. Will and Iso, in a human-viper relationship, were prepared for the difficulties to come. Nothing could prepare them for the meeting with Will's father, Eric. An honored and successful XCOM soldier from the liberation war.
A short story I wrote after losing a bet. I challenged someone who generally dislikes viper fiction to read "The Taming of Torque." To ensure they actually read the story, they had to pass a quiz I made. They passed, getting a 100%.
So I wrote a story that features "vipers getting killed." Overall I'm happy with how it came out, focusing on a question that the XCOM setting left unanswered.
